How to price car detailing

A detailing price is a package plus the extras. The package is priced by what it covers and by the size of the vehicle, since a sedan and a three-row SUV are not the same hours. The extras, pet hair, odor, shampoo, headlights, are lines of their own with their own amounts. The calculator above adds them up; the list below is where your own numbers go.

Packages by vehicle size

Many detailers keep one price for a car and a higher one for an SUV or truck, and add a surcharge for a three-row, a van or a lifted truck instead of writing a price for every model. Time a full detail on a sedan and on a large SUV once; the difference is your size step. Write the vehicle on the estimate next to the package.

Extras as their own lines

Dog hair, an ozone treatment, a seat shampoo or a headlight restoration each take real time, so each gets its own line and its own amount. On one line nobody argues about the total; buried in the package, the same work is a discount you did not mean to give.

Paint correction and coatings

A one-step correction and a ceramic coating take most of a day and the day has to be booked. Price them as their own jobs, not as extras, and many detailers ask for a deposit when the customer approves the estimate, so the day does not go empty. Check your state's rules before you set one.

Condition before you start

Scratches, chips and stains that were already there go on the estimate before the work, so they are not blamed on you after it. A line for the condition costs nothing and settles most questions at the end.

Car detailing price questions

Should I price by the vehicle or by the hour?
By the package and the vehicle for the work you do every week; by the hour for the jobs you cannot see whole until you open the doors. Say on the estimate which one the customer is looking at.
How do I quote a car I have not seen?
Ask what the vehicle is, how many rows and what the inside is like, give a price for that, and say it holds if the car is as described. Look it over when you arrive and add a line before you start.
Do I charge more for a three-row SUV or a van?
Many detailers add a set amount for a three-row, a van or a lifted truck. Put the surcharge on its own line.
What goes on the estimate for a ceramic coating?
The coating as its own job, the paint correction before it if there is one, the vehicle, and the deposit you ask for when the customer approves.
How do I price a customer who books every month?
Set a price per visit, usually the maintenance wash, and write how often you come. When the work changes, tell the customer before the visit the new price applies to, not on the invoice after it.
