What to put on a boat service estimate

Name the boat and where it is kept. Work you price by the foot gets the length as its quantity, and engine work and parts go on separate lines.

  • your business name, phone and email
  • your customer's name and the address of the job
  • an estimate number, the date and how long the price holds
  • each service and each part you plan to supply on its own line, with quantity and rate
  • any discount, tax and deposit to start
  • the total, and what the price leaves out

What an estimate has to show can differ by state, so check what applies where you work. This is general information, not tax or legal advice.

What each line on this estimate is for

Boat service is washing priced by the foot plus engine work and the occasional repair. The paper names the boat, and each service and part gets its own line.

Work priced by the foot
The length of the boat in the quantity column and your price per foot. Name the boat and where it is kept.
Work priced per engine
The number of engines in the quantity column, here two, and your price for one.
Service call and labor
The trip on one line, with the problem in the owner's words. What you did and the hours it took on the next.
Parts
A pump, a filter, an impeller: one line each, even the small ones.

In the notes, write where the boat is kept and the engine hours you read, as a plain number.

Where boat paperwork goes wrong: a per-foot price with no length next to it. Put the length in the quantity column and your price per foot as the rate, so the owner sees how the amount was reached.

Boat service estimate questions

What do I need to estimate a wash or a wax?

The length of the boat, the kind of boat, where it is kept and how it has been kept up.

Should the first visit be priced differently?

A boat that has been let go takes more work. Show the first visit or a clean-up as its own line.

How do I estimate engine work?

The labor and each part as separate lines, with the engine named. For two engines, show the price per engine.

What should a boat service estimate leave out?

Say it in the notes: what you cannot see until the work starts, parts the owner is supplying, and anything beyond the work named.

How long should the price hold?

Put a date on it. The estimate maker lets you set how long the price holds.
