What to put on a locksmith estimate

List the service call, then each lock or key on its own line, with the door or vehicle named in plain words.

  • your business name, phone and email
  • your customer's name and the address of the job
  • an estimate number, the date and how long the price holds
  • each service and each part you plan to supply on its own line, with quantity and rate
  • any discount, tax and deposit to start
  • the total, and what the price leaves out

What an estimate has to show can differ by state, so check what applies where you work. This is general information, not tax or legal advice.

What each line on this estimate is for

Locksmith work is counted: locks rekeyed, keys cut, hardware installed. The customer wants the count and the doors.

Service call
The trip. If your price for it differs by time of day, the invoice should show which one applied.
Rekey by the lock
The number of locks in the quantity column and the doors named in the description.
Keys
Counted, with a price for each.
Hardware installed
Its own line, with a plain name and the door it went on.

In the notes, write which doors you worked on and how many keys you handed over.

Where locksmith paperwork goes wrong: rekey, with one number. Say how many locks and which doors, and how many keys were cut.

Locksmith estimate questions

What do I tell a customer who asks for a price on the phone?

Your price for the service call and your price per lock, so the customer can add it up. If something could change it, say what.

What goes on a locksmith estimate?

The service call, the number of locks or doors, the hardware with plain names, the keys, and how long the price holds.

How do I describe hardware?

By what it is and where it goes: deadbolt, front door. Leave out claims about what it will stand up to.

Rekey or replace: how do I show both?

Send two estimates, one for each, so the customer can approve the one they want.

How long should the price hold?

Put a date on it. The estimate maker lets you set how long the price holds.
