What to put on a gutters estimate

Show the feet of gutter cleaned and the downspouts flushed. Small repairs go on separate lines.

  • your business name, phone and email
  • your customer's name and the address of the job
  • an estimate number, the date and how long the price holds
  • each service and each part you plan to supply on its own line, with quantity and rate
  • any discount, tax and deposit to start
  • the total, and what the price leaves out

What an estimate has to show can differ by state, so check what applies where you work. This is general information, not tax or legal advice.

What each line on this estimate is for

Gutter work is priced by the foot and by the story. The customer cannot see the result from the ground, so the invoice and a photo do the showing.

Cleaning by the foot
Feet of gutter in the quantity column, with the number of stories in the description.
Downspouts
Counted, with a price for each one flushed.
Guards
By the foot installed.
A small repair
Its own line with what was done, such as a resealed end cap.

In the notes, write what you saw up there: a loose section, a seam that drips, a downspout that drains against the house.

Where gutter paperwork goes wrong: cleaning and repairs in one number. Keep the cleaning by the foot on one line and each repair on its own, so the customer can see which was which.

Gutters estimate questions

Can I estimate from the ground or from photos?

Often, for cleaning: count the feet and the stories. Say in the notes that repairs are priced once you have been up there.

What goes on a gutter estimate?

The feet of gutter, the number of stories, the downspouts, and each repair or install as its own line.

What should a gutter estimate leave out?

Say it in the notes: damage behind a gutter that cannot be seen until a section comes off, and anything on the roof itself.

How do I estimate guards?

By the foot installed, with the cleaning before the install as its own line.

How long should the price hold?

Put a date on it. The estimate maker lets you set how long the price holds.
